I’ve only read the first two chapters and already find Nate’s writing spot on. My accountability group is reading it as a study and we all find ourselves wanting to read ahead. Looking forward to gleaning more sensible lessons as we continue reading and discussing.

Pastor Nate is a true artist with his writing skills and his ability to draw his readings in and connect with them in a truly inspiring way. By sharing his personal challenges he can relate to a vast population of individuals who need to hear what he has to say to help them through their own challenges. I have shared his book with a few others for this very reason!

This book spoke to me on a different level. Living within the Christian world, we are being told not to doubt or ask questions. We’re told to have faith instead. This book helps me to live both in doubt and faith in the same breath. I feel known on a deep level by reading this. And I feel encouraged by Nate’s words. READ THIS BOOK PEOPLE!

Through the real and raw stories of his own pain, and that of his family, Nate invites you into a journey of wonder- where is God. In a world where suffering is to be avoided or numbed we are invited instead to walk in community into the chaos, trusting in the God who meets us there in the person of Jesus, who himself met us in our suffering: God with us.

A very well written book that keeps the "Christian-ese" at a bare minimum so that anyone can understand. There was so much that we could relate to and had questioned ourselves. We are not alone. God is with us when we have more that we can handle!

This book encourages us how to stay strong when we feel doubt and down in our life. The author felt like that sometimes and shares what we learned with us.Someone wrote on the barracks wall of Auschwitz this " There is Grace, though and wander , on the way, Only they are hard to see, hard to embrace, for those compelled to wander in the darkness". This is a book about finding God and Grace as we wander in a darkness that is more than we can handle. It's about the moments when we're so overwhelmed that we wander direction less towards unknown destinations. It's about those times when we wonder if the God who promises to guide us had run far ahead and left us behind to stumble in the darkness on our own.On page 26 it says " Your pain is real. Your suffering is legitimate. What you are facing is more than you can handle. " On page 35 it says " Paul- the one who was shipwrecked for the sake of the Gospel, whose faith was so strong that people were healed when they touched rags he used to wipe his brow, who converted guards while in jail, who brazeingly stood before rulers and confessed Jesus as Lord, said he despaired of life. He didn't just have a bad day. The pain was too great. He wanted to give up. He considered abandoning everything because it no longer seemed worth the struggle. It is when we are at our frailest that Christ's power can rest on us. When we can no longer keep going. When we're empty. Confused. Exhausted. "On page 75 it says " Suffering is a reality whenever our ability to flourish is stolen from us. There is an unspoken pressure to dance, smile, and thank God for his faithfulness. This is what good Christians do, isn't it?On page 89 he asks" Why was the temptation to be like God so compelling to Eve? Is it because the anxiety and fear of not knowing what tomorrow would bring subtly gnawed at her just before she fell asleep. "On page 132 it says " What kind of God demands that action as a test of faith? What kind of God forces the the choices between the God who promised you an unimaginable legacy or the son you prayed for. Even if it was all a simple test, it is cruel in the highest sense."On page 167 it says " the one young child too light to quickly expedite his own death hung at the end of the rope for a hellish amount of time. He remained for more than a half an hour , lingering between life and death. We were forced to look at him at close range. For God's sake, where is God? "On page 179 it says " God doesn't doesn't just offer a cure. God brings wholeness. Jesus didn't stop Peter from disowning him, but he did restore him. Jesus didn't end Mary's pain as she watched her son die, but he did see that was cared for. " On page 189 it says " our heavenly father adopts us as sons and daughters, and he wraps his robe around iur shoulders ."Disclosure of Material Connection. I had never heard of Nate Pyle ... I was drawn in by the name of the book. There are many days where I feel like life is more than I can handle. I wasn't a fan of this book. Wasn't a fan of his writing style. I felt like I was lost through most of it. Felt like it jumped from here to there wit no connection between the stories or thoughts. I wanted to like the book. I wanted more from the book ... The title of the book drew me in and I wanted so badly to like it. Maybe I felt like I needed more from the book than a book can give. Honestly I don't think there is really an answer for when life just feels like it is failing miserably. I'm not sure that any book or any conversation can really answer the questions that plague many of us when we say that life is more than we can handle. Short of having a face to face with the almighty ... I don't think we will ever feel satisfied with words to these questions.Book Description"God won't give you more than you can handle." This is one of the most common and least helpful reassurances floating around Christian circles. It is anything but biblical. The truth is that God does allow a lot more than we can handle. But why?Nate Pyle has walked through tragedy in his own life--professional uncertainty, the intense impact of mental illness, and the struggle to build a family because of a lost pregnancy, infertility, and adoption. As a pastor, Nate has cried with countless people experiencing deep and overwhelming pain. They want answers but perhaps even more, they want someone to sit with them as they lament.Cliché Christianity tells us not to ask questions in hard times. Yet transformation awaits us in the dark night of the soul. In More Than You Can Handle, Nate asks with you: "God, where are you in this pain? Why don't you step in and act?" Because when we courageously bring all of who we are to all of who God is--and stop pretending we can "handle" life--we encounter the God of Redemption. The good news isn't that we can handle everything, but rather that God promises to be with us at the very moments we can't handle anything.Skillfully weaving together his own story, the stories of others, and a powerful look at the life of Jesus, Nate delivers a fresh and timely response to the pain we each experience. As Nate reminds us, the only thing more overwhelming than the pain of life is the love of a God who carries that pain with us.

Fast delivery, Nice and Well made book. Can't wait to start reading and using it .

Excellent !

In Defense of the Bush DoctrineBy Robert G. Kaufman

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, shattered the prevalent optimism in the United States that had blossomed during the tranquil and prosperous 1990s, when democracy seemed triumphant and catastrophic wars were a relic of the past.President George W. Bush responded with a bold and controversial grand strategy for waging a preemptive Global War on Terror, which has ignited passionate debate about the purposes of American power and the nation's proper role in the world. In Defense of the Bush Doctrine offers a vigorous argument for the principles of moral democratic realism that inspired the Bush administration's policy of regime change in Iraq. The Bush Doctrine rests on two main pillars―the inadequacy of deterrence and containment strategies when dealing with terrorists and rogue regimes, and the culture of tyranny in the Middle East, which spawns aggressive secular and religious despotisms. Two key premises shape Kaufman's case for the Bush Doctrine's conformity with moral democratic realism. The first is the fundamental purpose of American foreign policy since its inception: to ensure the integrity and vitality of a free society "founded upon the dignity and worth of the individual." The second premise is that the cardinal virtue of prudence (the right reason about things to be done) must be the standard for determining the best practicable American grand strategy. In Defense of the Bush Doctrine provides a broader historical context for the post–September 11 American foreign policy that will transform world politics well into the future. Kaufman connects the Bush Doctrine and current issues in American foreign policy, such as how the U.S. should deal with China, to the deeper tradition of American diplomacy. Drawing from positive lessons as well as cautionary tales from the past, Kaufman concludes that moral democratic realism offers the most compelling framework for American grand strategy, as it expands the democratic zone of peace and minimizes the number and gravity of threats the United States faces in the modern world.

Review
"Kaufman's fine book is required reading for thoughtful candidates and citizens alike."―George Weigel, Catholic Exchange

"The best part of Kaufman's book is his critical analysis of alternatives, in U.S. grand strategy, to the Bush doctrine, whose moral democratic realism entails the prudent application of American power to replace dangerous regimes in the Middle East."―Library Journal (starred review)

"A very interesting book, based on a fresh concept of 'moral democratic realism,' that distinguishes Kaufman's work from that of Charles Krauthammer, William Kristol, Robert Kagan, Francis Fukuyama, and others. A helpful and clarifying book."―Michael Novak, coauthor of Washington's God and author of The Spirit of Democ

"In this excellent new book, Kaufman describes the Bush approach to foreign policy as the latest example of what he calls moral democratic realism, an approach he attributes to FDR, Truman, and Reagan as well."―National Review

"This is a very well-grounded defense of the Bush Doctrine. It is scholarly and political in the best sense of both terms. Those who disagree (as I do) will be challenged and informed."―Robert Jervis, author of American Foreign Policy in a New Era

"An important book about the central issue of our time."―Senator Joe Lieberman

"President Bush could use an unapologetic argument for his foreign policy these days, and this is it...[Kaufmann] makes a persuasive case."―The Weekly Standard

"Kaufman offers a much needed, well-reasoned defense of the present Bush doctrine in the Middle East. As Kaufman shows, for all the heartbreak in our present efforts in Iraq, ultimately it remains the best practical and moral course to foster some third way other than either autocracy or theocracy"―Victor Davis Hanson, author of A War Like No Other: How the Athenians and Spart

"Kaufman presents a thoughtful, comprehensive case. It ranks as the most histocially powerful support of Mr. Bush and his doctrine, including the Iraq war."―Washington Times

"The author has compiled, better than anywhere else that I have seen, a systematic explanation of the Bush Doctrine and its moral and historical foundations."―Modern Age, Ted V. McAllister

"Kaufman is passionate without being polemical, and is quite evenhanded, consistently pointing out arguments and examples that disagree with his point of view. This is a provocative book written by a first-rate mind."―John Robert Greene, Historian

"Robert Kaufman's short and provocative book provides and interesting and timely defense of what is perhaps become one of the most contentious concepts in international politics."―Andrew J. Futter, University of Birmingham, Political Studies Review

I'm trying to alternate between fun audiobooks and ones that I feel I should read rather than having any desire to do so. Plato's Republic was in that second group. I honestly expected to hate it. But it's one of the fundamental classics. So on the list it goes to listen to while I commute. And I loved it. It may have been that it was a full cast audio but it honestly did feel like being with a group. Maybe a quarter of the way in I realized what it reminded me of: when you are at a very mellow party in college and people start discussing things that are really "deep, man." And there's that one person who is way too into it and dominates the conversation. So that tickled me most of the book. The other thing that was really engaging was how much of the ideas in this book can be seen in the modern world. In that way it made it feel like an anthropological study and it kept making me say, "neat," even when I disagreed with whatever point was being made. Overall I would recommend this audiobook version because it made it come alive.

Whew, that was an intense read! I gave five stars because after careful consideration I realized that Alan Blooms interpretive essay really helped me to understand the The Republic to a different degree. The first ten books are the shoes, the interpretive essay is the shoe lace and it ties all of it up very neatly. To read something over 2,000 years old that’s been translated from Ancient Greek is a task in itself, I commend this translations interpreter he did a stellar job. This book is Heavy and not a book you can just pick up and expect to read in a weekend, its not littered with images that create a perfect picture for you to burn thru, it’s page after page after page of thought, so it slows you down, a lot. Each page forces you to think about what you’re reading, sometimes you have ZERO Idea and that’s ok, that’s where Bloom’s Interpretive Essay comes in. To pick up this book and commit to finishing it is a Challenge I highly recommend, you’ll walk away a better person with a sense of accomplishment and more thoughtful mind. I’ve read over 200 books and I think it’s safe to say that this was the most challenging book I’ve ever put my mind too, if your looking for a challenge then you’ve found it. Happy reading 📖

While the book was written in 380 BCE it is, perhaps, more relevant today than at any time in its history. You would almost think that Plato had pulled a Dr. Who and transported himself to 2018 before sitting down to write. It couldn’t be more tailored to the political, social, and economic environment in which we currently find ourselves.Plato/Socrates use elenctic (i.e. Socratic) questioning to explore human happiness and the specific virtue of justice. Socrates believed: “by curing people of the hubris of thinking they know when they do not…makes them happier and more virtuous than anything else.”Socrates and his friends pursue this journey by defining the ideal city – Kallipolis—and its rulers and constitution, the idea being that truth is often easier to discern on a large scale (i.e. a city) that can then be applied on a smaller scale (i.e. the individual). The debate focuses on the four virtues of an ideal city—wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. And results in the conclusion that the human soul is made up of three parts—the appetitive, spirited, and rational—and that virtue, ultimately proven to be the source of happiness exists when the three are in balance and harmony.Socrates ultimately defines five political/economic models—philosopher/king, timocracy, oligopoly, democracy, and tyranny. And he ranks them, from good to bad, in the order listed, essentially arguing that they form an inverse ladder in which one inevitably deteriorates into the latter. That means, in essence, that oligopoly inevitably deteriorates into democracy, which he clearly doesn’t not hold in very high esteem. Freedom, by his logic, is unsustainable. In the simplest terms, the unfettered pursuit of freedom by everyone ultimately leads to conflict and that, in turn, inevitably leads to a race for power defined by manipulation, deception, and injustice. As a result, democracy inevitably leads to tyranny as the ruling class preys—quite deceitfully—on the fears of the masses that they, the masses, are being sidelined and their interests ignored. Sound familiar? The elenctic, commonly known as the Socratic method, has been largely stripped from our political and academic discourse. People are sure of what they know and don’t want to know anything else. The thirst for victory has, as a result, crushed the thirst for knowledge. There are many reasons for this. Technology, which gave rise to the echo chamber, has certainly contributed. Impatience has also played a big role. Elenctic takes time and our collective attention spans have dwindled to near nothing. Education, I believe Plato would say, however, is probably the real culprit. Oppression, sheltering, and victimization have replaced Plato’s definition of the ideal education: physical training, musical training (including prose and speech), mathematics, and dialectic. On the surface, critics will find no shortage of targets in the logic. More than anything else, however, both the argument and any criticism that might be drawn, reflect the imprecision of language itself and the difficultly this presents for philosophers willing to tackle the biggest and most relevant issues of life. That, however, simply reinforces Plato’s encouragement to ask more questions, listen more attentively with an open mind, and never assume you know the real answer. Which is why his ultimate encouragement it seems to me is not to admire things that are beautiful or just, but to truly understand what beauty and justice are. Sadly, I can think of no leader today who is doing anything even remotely close to that.Read it. It will make you a better leader, citizen, parent, friend, and person.

Plato’s Republic (Greek: Πολιτεία, Politeia; Latin: Res Publica) was written in 380 BC and this version was translated by Benjamin Jowett in 1871. It is a fiction book in the format of a discussion between Socrates and others. It aims to debate and conclusively determine the meaning of Justice. Socrates, the main character, was a Greek philosopher and the mentor of Plato. His philosophy is the basis and origin of the western philosophy. As a high schooler who often debates similar ideals and questions, I found this book to be very eye-opening and fascinating. Socrates doctrine proves itself true even in this day in age. That just goes to show, when it comes to ideals and behavior, humans haven’t changed very much. Republic is very well written and even after thousands of years it still captures its audience with its provoking revelations and relatable content. If you often find yourself debating similar questions then you might just find your answers here, but if you dislike philosophy or are set in your ways you probably will not find this book to be interesting. For me, this book was an enjoyable challenge and I definitely would read it again.

This Kindle edition is not as advertised and entirely useless. First and foremost, it is absolutely not an annotated edition; there is not a single note anywhere in the text. For that matter, there are no Stephanus numbers—the universal page numbers for all editions of Plato—so you will never be able to either cite this edition or find anything referred to by other writers. I'm not even sure that this is the Reeves/Grube translation, as there is no publication information whatsoever. Avoid this like the Athenian plague.

Then Justin is paired with him for a class project. As he gets to know Jinsen and his incredible artistic talent, Justin questions his own beliefs. But being friends with Buddha Boy isn’t simple, especially when Justin realizes that he’s going to have to take sides. From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10-Justin-an "average" kid-serves as the interface between readers (and to some extent his schoolmates) and Michael Martin, aka Buddha Boy, whose Buddhist teacher named him Jinsen, "fountain of God." Justin mostly wants to pass through high school unnoticed (beneath the notice of the school's "royalty"), doing his work and enjoying his friends. He is fortunate to have supportive, albeit divorced, parents-another facet of the novel that sets it apart in a field full of useless adults. But Justin is stirred out of his camouflage by the animosity that the new kid incites, quite unintentionally, simply by being different. Both irritated and intrigued by Jinsen's apparent imperturbability to his tormentors, Justin is also astonished by Jinsen's artistic abilities. Koja flawlessly walks a tightrope in her presentation of Jinsen-devout without being sanctimonious, insufferable, or simply unbelievable-and solidly nails the small-minded, fearful, and even paranoid mind-set that dominates the high school milieu. Like Chris Crutcher and Chris Lynch, the author is deeply concerned with the psychological motivations for behavior and the belief that explicable causes generally underlie what may seem to be inexplicable actions. At the heart of her story is a deeply religious character who is neither naive nor clownish, neither self-righteous nor pitiful. Buddha Boy has a whole lot of action compressed into a short time span, but Koja admirably refuses to yield to melodramatic writing or black-and-white solutions. Quickly paced, inviting, and eye-opening, this is a marvelous addition to YA literature.

From Booklist
Gr. 6-10. No one in the rich, suburban high school likes the weird new kid who looks like a Buddhist monk and begs at lunch. But Justin is drawn to the stranger and defends him against vicious school bullies. Koja's short novel is openly preachy, and the packed plot is absurdly contrived: the saintly outsider turns out to be an amazingly gifted artist who was once a delinquent as violent as the school bullies--until his parents died and he went catatonic and a Buddhist art teacher showed him how to find truth and beauty in art and religion . . . It's the simple writing, along with Justin's informal first-person narrative, that will draw readers to the crucial ethical issues, especially "the social-status in-out thing" among the kids, and the way school authorities accept it. Then there's the elemental question of how hard it is to do the right thing, and to keep on doing it. "We're all gods inside, right? Karma, right?" Teens will find much to talk about here.
