This book is a really unique graphic non-fiction, providing a biography of the philosopher and activist Hannah Arendt. New Yorker magazine cartoonist Ken Krimstein has done an astonishing job of literally illustrating Arendt's life and ideas. Krimstein even provides ample footnotes to concisely describe the many other historical figures who were part of Arendt's life. This book is timely, as Arendt's interests in issues such as her book title "The Origins of Totalitarianism" resonate in today's geopolitics. But having this biography, history, and philosophy presented in graphic form creates powerful engagement with the subjects. It is a really enjoyable and satisfying book.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book...not because I had any doubts about the topic or author (the latter is a friend of mine), but because I didn't inherently "get" the idea of a graphic biography.It worked on many different levels: First, the images frequently informed the text, as frames showing characters responding in conversations gave insight into their feelings (Arendt's convo with Benjamin is one example, pg 120); graphics also extended the text, providing background images that added to the story (like the changes underway in Germany, and how it must have felt, pgs 56-65); and sometimes also told the story in a different, or parallel way, especially when it came to articulating Arendt's evolving thinking (pgs 214-215, for instance).The storytelling was compelling (Ken gives Arendt a voice that is vernacular for 2018, so it's easy and often fun to read) and, though I'm no visual artist, his drawings are infinitely varied, seem to mix media (pens and ink maybe?), and possess a sense of movement (Arendt's view of her library on pg. 72 literally led my eye around the page).Well done, and well worth the purchase!

This is an important book about an important philosopher. The author has clearly done his homework, and the result is a literary and graphic masterwork unlike any I have seen before. The words, the images and even the footnotes all opened up a world for me that I did not know before. I recommend reading it to understand the world in a deeper way, particularly in our current political climate.

I've read one biography of Hannah Arendt and a smattering of her work, so I may not be the best-qualified person to judge Ken Krimstein's graphic novel about her life and thought, "The Three Escapes of Hannah Arendt", but I enjoyed reading it. I found it a fun read, in fact, though the subject matter is often grim. This work is not about Arendt's philosophy or political theory. It is a biographical work that emphasizes Arendt's lifelong search for a way to understand the world around her, including the conclusions she came to along the way, her "truths".Krimstein frames the events of Arendt's life in three "escapes", but first he recounts the social trials of Arendt's childhood and youth, the beginning of her quest to understand, and her infamous relationship with her professor, philosopher Martin Heidegger, at the University of Marburg. The three "escapes" are from Berlin in 1933 after being arrested for research she was doing for a Zionist organization, from France in 1941 after escaping an internment camp during Germany's invasion, and the third escape seems to be figurative, while Arendt lived and worked in New York.I am reading an advance reading copy of this book, so I can't comment on an 8-page color insert that will be in the final edition. The graphics for most of the book are two-color, draw with a light hand, not filled-in. The text is all-caps with a hand-written appearance. I did not have any trouble reading it, but I did have trouble with the "suggested reading" list at the back; that font has poor legibility. Many intellectuals of the day and philosophers of the past are mentioned throughout. They are always footnoted in clear font, so readers will not be left wondering.Ken Krimstein admires Hannah Arendt very much and takes a particular line in presenting her life and character that is hagiographic at times. Heidegger seems to occupy Arendt's thoughts too much, long after they lost contact, to be realistic. I don't know if this is true, or if it is just a perennial fascination of Arendt's biographers and critics. Krimstein uses Heidegger to illustrate arguments that Arendt has with herself in later years. In any case, "The Three Escapes of Hannah Arendt" is light on the ideas that made her important, but it is an enjoyable biography and introduction to Arendt's work.

Because this book had so many high reviews I downloaded it despite the high price tag ($5.38 for 200 pages). Unfortunately I don't feel as though I got my money's worth.Cons: everything is repetitive. I imagine the first ten pages of the book were the most interesting for me. After that it's just following Jin's self pity and contradicting actions and hearing Logan's verbal claims on his mate. All the characters are shallow and their actions don't match their thoughts. The universe itself has already been done by other authors so I can't even give much credit to that. The sex scenes, although hot at first, were overdone. By the end of the book every other scene was sex with only little change. I felt as though there was very little character development that we could see and what changes happened were because the author states that they had. I'd pay $5 for a regular novel with no problem but this was something I'd be disappointed to read even finding it for free somewhere as an amateur work.Pros: Calmes writing isn't bad on the word by word level and it was properly edited. The cover art is nice which was probably the reason I even looked at the page in the first place. All over this book was physically done with a lot of care. The characters seemed like they had a lot of potential and their personalities were interesting, I just wished I'd seen more done with that.I read this whole book to give it a fair review but I'm sorry to say I don't plan on buying the rest of the series. The next book seems like it's much of the same and 200 pages is enough of Jin's self pity and Logan forcing his mate to do what he wants him to for me.

DNF 20%My issue with this book is something you either REALLY mind or you don't. If I had to name it using just one word I think "destiny" might help out but it's not just it.. Reading PNR books you are usually presented with a lot of situations in which people are "destined" to be together and so their attraction is either OTT or there's this "click" between them they can't shut off and here they are - a couple. While I CAN accept that in PNR books to some extent I don't like it. Heck, the MC in this book doesn't like the idea of being stuck with someone because that's how the "laws of attraction" works so why should I?Jin Rayne is a werepanther but he's not just ANY werepanther, he is destined to mate with a pack leader (there's a special name for that "destined job"). That's is quite bizarre considering he is male and pack leaders is male "job". What kind of pack leader would want a man for a mate? Jin does his best to avoid any pack leader not only to NOT stumble upon his destined mate but also because he has a certain appeal because of his special "destiny" that makes him likeable to right around anyone who meets him (human or shifter). Though it's nice having most of everyone on your side it felt a bit "staged" and very "fake". While Jin was trying his best to stay in the side lines, wherever he goes people just want him to stay and almost worship his strange appeal. When meeting other shifters with other "destinies" (other "jobs") it become a little unbearable for me. I understand that shifters are not a real thing.. but I would like the story at least to feel realistic somehow. Alas, it wasn't.The obsession with Jin's "destiny" was beyond annoying. He is this rear thing everyone wants to snatch. But since HE is the only one who knows the "old rules" he keeps explaining it to everyone - why they CAN'T have him and why HE has to choose his mate. 20% in and I was not only bored with learning the special pack "jobs" (mostly destined ones) I was annoyed that people's acts were NOT their own. They behaved through those roles with instinct and at times without knowing why they are doing what they are doing...An example needs to be made.. I know.. okay, so there's the job of a "protector" to a pack. Jin meets this guy who is a protector to a pack leader (the one who is going to be Jin's mate, only one knowing that is whomever read the synopsis ;)) when he meets Jin he wants to know who is mate is and if he doesn't have one (which it seems to be so because he isn't marked and because he doesn't smell mated or something like that..) he INSTANTLY becomes overly protective of him. He doesn't know who he is but he wants him to meet his pack leader (to determine if he is his destined mate) and even though he is suspicious about him (saying he is mated, yet he isn't) he is still protective of him. SAY WHAT? Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.Rating: 6/10PROS:- The tribal politics of the shifter society are interesting and from what I can tell, unique to the story. I also like that the politics are backed by actual written laws.- The narrator’s attitude is amusing sometimes, particularly when he makes snide comments about other characters or his surroundings.- Jin is a typical Calmes protagonist in that he gets himself into all kinds of trouble and then reacts with a foolishly freewheeling attitude. “If I got upset every time someone beat me,” he says, “or chased me, or tried to rape me, I’d be crying in my cereal every morning.” (I put this as a PRO because I found the *first* character like this amusing, although I admit that I’m growing tired of it now.)CONS:- There are arguments throughout the story that go on for far too long, with the same points being made multiple times on each side. The writing is needlessly repetitive at other times, too. Here’s an example from (I think) the second page: “The fact remained that she was out, seemingly alone, at two in the morning in a very bad part of town,” and then three short paragraphs later, there’s this: “Two in the morning in a bad part of town all alone, the girl obviously had a death wish.”- The dialogue is sometimes a little awkward because the speaker is talking more to the reader than to the other characters present, using conversation to impart background information in a way that doesn’t sound realistic. Also, I take exposition to heart, so when “several minutes [tick] by before he [speaks],” and then less than a page later, “we[‘re] silent for several minutes before he [speaks],” and so on…I imagine the conversations taking FOREVER.- I found the ending anticlimactic.Overall comments: This is the third or fourth Calmes book I’ve read, and there’s certainly a pattern among them: her main characters lead charmed lives with foes getting their comeuppance in satisfying ways and past loves being told flippantly by the protagonist that they’re too late. I didn’t dislike this; I’m just growing tired of the formula. (WARNING for those who are squicked by animalish sex scenes: there are a few scenes here when the guys aren’t entirely human.)
